God
There is one God who has existed and will exist forever as three equal persons; the Father, the Son and the Spirit. He is ethically and morally unchangable; his nature and essence are forever the same.
The Bible
The Bible was written by men who were inspired by God and is complete. It is without error as originally recorded, and is accurate in every category of knowledge to which it speaks, including science and history.
Humanity
Man was created in the image of God for the purpose of giving him glory, and is therefore of tremendous worth. But because of his sin nature and failure to be holy, mankind has experienced a separation from God.
Jesus
Jesus is God. He is the Creator of everything. He became a man, born of the Virgin Mary by miraculous conception. He lived a sinless human life to offer himself as a perfect sacrifice for the sins of all. He accomplished this by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days and returned to heaven. He is currently an intercessor with a very holy Father on behalf of those who have chosen to trust him for eternal life. He will return again to earth as promised in scripture.
Salvation
Whoever is drawn by God, beleives in and trusts the completed work of Jesus becomes, by God's grace, a child of God. The perfection of God's work, and the promises of the Bible give the believer assurance that his salvation will endure.
The Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God. He is present in the world to make people aware of their need for Jesus Christ. He also lives in every Christian from the moment of salvation. He provides the Christian with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth and guidance in doing what is right.
The Local Church
The local Church is a community of regenerated believers in Jesus who confess Jesus Christ as Lord. In obedience to scripture, they organize under qualified leadership, gather regularly for preaching and worship, observe the biblical sacraments of baptism and communion, are unified by the Spirit, are disciplined for holiness, and scatter to fulfill the Great Commandment and the Great Commission as missionaries in the world for God’s glory and their joy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q . Is NHBC charismatic?
A . No, if that is meant in the sense of a continuous emphasis on the sign gifts; prevalent speaking in tongues, continual
solicitation of healings, etc. But we are charismatic if that is meant in the classical Biblical sense. "Charisma" is a
Greek word for gift. We see in scripture that every believer is supernaturally equipped with (a) spiritual gift(s),
and that each local expression of the body of Christ will function and grow most effectively only when its members are
involved in the ministry in such a way that each is giving adequate, appropriate expression to his or her gift(s).
We don't believe that God's people should persue signs and wonders. As God's people follow Jesus, signs and wonders will
follow them.
Q. Is NHBC's Doctrine Calvinistic?
A . We do not subscribe to
all of the classical "Five Points of Calvinism" statement, commonly known by the acronym: T.U.L.I.P. Nor are we Arminian (we acknowledge that scripture
teaches the eternal security of the true believer - Perseverance of the Saints ). We believe that the truth about the nature
of God and his relationship with a fallen race as revealed in the Bible lies between these doctrinal extremes.
The Bible teaches that God is sovereign, but it also teaches that man is responsible. The benefit of the Gospel is available
to whoever will receive it. God, having knowledge of the future, has elected each of those who chose to accept Him and
predestined that they will be with him forever.
Limited Atonement and Irresistible Grace are the teachings of Calvinism with which we take greatest exception.
Our view of God allows for a sovereign Deity who has exhaustive foreknowledge and comfortably coexists with the freely
chosen acts of his volitional creatures.
